We install bimetallic heating radiators with our own hands

Repair of the heating system in a private house or apartment is most often done with the replacement of old cast-iron batteries with modern and more practical devices. A good solution is to install bimetallic heating radiators with your own hands, this can be explained by the neat appearance of the products and the creation of an atmosphere of comfort in the house.

The scheme of such a heating device system is simple, the whole structure consists only of heating radiators and steel pipes that are connected to them using spot welding.

When installing bimetallic pipes, it is not necessary to destroy walls, floors, slopes and other planes, since all work is carried out quite accurately.

What type of radiators to choose?

Before you buy a heater, you need to familiarize yourself with the existing types and decide which one is suitable in this case. So, in the store you can find cast iron, steel, aluminum and bimetallic batteries, while it is difficult to single out one ideal option suitable for everyone. For example, the most unsuccessful solution for an urban new building with central heating would be the installation of aluminum radiators. The reason lies not only in the fact that aluminum batteries can not withstand high pressure. Basically, the central heating system is made of steel, and this material easily enters into some chemical reactions when it comes into contact with water.

It should be noted that aluminum is not a chemically inert material, therefore, using such elements to create a heating system, the service life of both the system and the devices themselves is significantly reduced. Regarding this feature, bimetallic devices do not have such disadvantages. During the tests, they distinguished themselves by good working pressure values.

If you pay attention to the aesthetic and design features, it is worth saying that these modern devices fit well into any interior of any room.

Bimetal batteries can be of different shapes and sizes, and the surface can be of any color. Such a product is immediately difficult to distinguish from aluminum batteries, but its weight is much heavier by about one and a half times.

According to the technology used in the production of batteries, bimetallic products can be:

  • based on a steel frame;
  • with significantly enhanced channels.

Steel-framed batteries prevent water contact inside the aluminum-coated system. In addition, it is worth noting that such batteries are distinguished by better protection, durability and resistance to corrosive damage.

We install a radiator with a steel frame: the best anti-corrosion solution

Products made by reinforcing aluminum channels with steel elements have good performance, while reliable fixation of steel inserts is assumed. If they are not fixed correctly, then there is a risk of overlapping the collector from below. This phenomenon can occur due to the difference in thermal expansion of materials such as steel and aluminum.

If the first option is chosen, then you should pay attention to the cost and weight of the radiator.

Note! When heating or cooling bimetallic radiators, a knock may be heard. This is due to the different expansion of aluminum and steel elements in the process of temperature change. Knowing this feature, such a situation should not scare.

What are the advantages of bimetal radiators?

  • Relatively long lines of use (approximately 20 years or more).
  • Increased heat dissipation.
  • Mechanical and hydrodynamic strength characteristics.
  • Ergonomic and attractive appearance.
  • Due to the use of steel elements in bimetallic products for heating, the corrosion resistance of heating devices decreases, in addition, the working pressure inside the system itself increases.

Note! There are few heating networks with pressures up to 50 atmospheres. It is for this indicator that bimetallic batteries are designed. Despite this, in many plumbing systems there is a risk of water hammer, so battery replacement must be carried out with the utmost care.

  • Based on the design of bimetallic batteries, there are channels with a small diameter, which cannot be said about cast iron radiators. Thus, it is possible to reduce the volume of the coolant. What actually happens? The temperature of the product will change quickly enough, which depends on the change in the position of the thermostat.
  • Bimetallic batteries cost about 20% more than similar aluminum radiators. But such costs are justified, since the quality and reliability are much higher.

The cost of bimetallic batteries must be included in the repair estimate, if one is developed before work. Otherwise, there is a risk of going beyond the budget, because high-quality radiators are not cheap.

If there is no certain experience and knowledge, then you should not interfere with the heating system, as this may adversely affect its operation and the quality of heating the room. Before you replace heating radiators in a house or apartment with your own hands, you must definitely familiarize yourself with the important rules that must be followed in further operation.

  • The normal distance from the floor to the bottom of the radiator should be at least 60-70 mm, but not more than 100-120 mm. Such conditions are necessary to maintain a high quality of heat transfer.
  • The upper area of the battery should be located at a distance of 5-6 cm from the edge of the window sill. Thus, convection improves and the installation process of such equipment is facilitated.
  • Experts recommend placing the radiator approximately in the center of the window.
  • Purchased equipment must be installed only horizontally.
  • Heating elements should be placed on the same level, and this applies to all rooms.

The installed bimetallic batteries in the apartment cannot be treated with metal coatings, since the paint layer disrupts the operation of the thermostat, while on average, heat transfer rates decrease by 10%.

You also need to remember that it is impossible to clean such devices with abrasive substances.

After installation, bimetallic batteries are NOT painted in the color of the interior!

The principle of installation of bimetallic radiators

You can replace old batteries with new devices with your own hands without the help of specialists, only some knowledge and skills will be required to properly perform the work.

As a rule, the installation of the heating system must be carried out in several stages.

First you need to carefully dismantle the old radiators, while we must not forget about the thorough preparation of the working area. As a result of the preparatory work, a place is planned for installing a new heating device, and holes are drilled for the installation of brackets.

Using dowels or cement mortar, the supporting part is fixed to the wall.

After that, you need to carefully place the battery case on the installed brackets, passing the hooks between the sections of the product (horizontal collectors).

This is not the end of the installation of bimetallic radiators. The equipment is equipped with additional fittings and a jumper, only after that the pipelines of the heating system are mounted.

We must also not forget about one very important nuance. The radiator must be equipped with an air valve. This is done to remove excess air from the system.

When it's time to fill the system with coolant, you need to close the stabilizing valve by 2/3 to prevent water hammer.

We install an air valve on the battery to avoid water hammer

Upon completion of the installation of bimetallic heating radiators, it is required to perform the first test work regarding the strength of the entire structure. In addition, it is necessary to clean the battery well, removing dust and dirt from its case.

When using the heating system, it is also necessary to follow important rules and follow some recommendations:

  • cleaning of the radiator should be carried out at least 1-2 times a year, namely before and after the heating season;
  • it is possible to completely drain the coolant from the heating system only for two weeks, no more;
  • shut-off valves cannot be abruptly opened;
  • the holes intended for the release of air are in no case painted;
  • some heating systems are best equipped with a special pump or a closed expansion tank.

Replacement or installation of radiators is carried out before all cosmetic work. The sequence of repair work must be prescribed in advance to avoid misunderstandings.

Do-it-yourself high-quality installation of bimetallic batteries and successfully carried out test work is the key to a long and reliable functioning of the entire heating system.
