In a private house, it is not difficult to solve the problem, but for residents of apartment buildings, even the smallest leak can cause serious trouble. At the height of the heating season, it is very difficult to shut off the heating riser, of course, if water spouts from a pipe or radiator, then there is simply no other way out. You need to urgently run or swim to the phone and call the emergency team.
But, as a rule, global breakthroughs do not just happen. The peak of accidents occurs at the beginning of the heating season, when pressure and temperature increase in the system. It is noticed that most often, a leak in heating begins for two reasons.
1. The apartment has old, worn out pipes and batteries.
2. The heating system was recently changed and was poorly sealed.
If one of these factors is present in your apartment, you are at risk. It is much easier to solve a problem than to wait for it to arise, as they say - "Forewarned is forearmed!" So, here are a few ways to temporarily fix a leak.
How to fix a leaking heating pipe
1. If the fistula is small and appeared on an old pipe, you will need a small piece of soft rubber, 3 standard clamps, or several pieces of wire. As rubber, a segment from a bicycle or car camera is quite suitable. Wrap a strip of rubber around the problem area in several layers and clamp it tightly with a clamp at the leak. Two additional collars are used along the edges as insurance.
If you need to fix the leak urgently, and there are no rubber and clamps at hand, use a medical tourniquet, tightly wrap the current area with it and clamp it with ordinary wire.
2. In some cases, fix leaking heating pipes with the help of improvised materials it is not possible; for such purposes, a metal pipe bandage must be in the tools of a home master (you can buy it in almost any plumbing department). Strong rubber is laid on the pipe, fixed with a bandage and, with the help of special bolts, it is crimped over the entire area of the emergency section.
3. If the heating pipe is leaking at the threaded connection of the pipe and fitting, clamps will not help, because. Pipe and fitting diameters are different sizes. In this case, an effective option would be to use a bandage, but with a slightly modified design option. Instead of the thick rubber from the kit, use rubber from a bicycle inner tube. In order to compensate for the difference in size, first make a few turns on the pipe itself. On top of the rubber is fixed with a crimp pad and bolts.
How to fix a battery leak
1. If the battery has leaked at the joints of the sections, the damaged area must be rewound with a piece of fabric previously impregnated with epoxy resin. After drying, the fabric hardens and the flow stops.
2. For small damages, a special sealant is used - the so-called cold welding. In appearance, it resembles children's plasticine. We knead a small piece of welding with our hands until a uniform color and condition, and with pressing movements we cover the place of leakage.
3. If you notice a rusty spot on the battery that is not leaking yet, but is already slightly damp, sprinkle it with coarse table salt and wrap it with a rag. After some time, the crack will heal.
4. Another popular way is a cement bandage. A piece of fabric is impregnated with an adhesive cement mortar with the addition of gypsum, quickly wrapped around the damage and allowed to dry. After such a procedure, the “place of treatment” is painted over with a layer of thick oil paint.
How to fix a plastic pipe leak
Modern plastic and metal-plastic pipes seem to be eternal, but unfortunately, they sometimes cause trouble. Most often this happens due to the initial improper installation or when using low-quality components.
1. If water dripped at the joints, the fittings may have loosened, slightly tighten the nut with a wrench, the leak should disappear. But here you should be very careful, one sudden movement and the fitting can burst. Do not overdo it.
2. Tow with silicone sealant helps to eliminate a small leak at the joints. Tow is impregnated with silicone and wrapped several times at the junction.
3. If a plastic pipe has leaked, you can temporarily fix the leak with an adhesive bandage. A piece of fiberglass is smeared with epoxy glue and wrapped around the pipe 5-6 times, and then fixed with clamps or ties.
Any of the above methods is only good for temporarily fixing a leak. The heating system will need to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. If the first bell rang, do not delay the repair and do not wait for the second, otherwise it can turn into big problems. It is quite difficult to stop a hot water fountain, it is much easier and cheaper to prevent a breakthrough.
