PRESENT SIMPLE. Lots of exercise

Without active use, the language dies, and this is not just an axiom, but a theorem proven by life. Therefore, if you do not want to turn your English into a frozen Latin, resort to developing skills more often in practice. Today we will work on the written development of the acquired knowledge, performing exercises for tenses in English. To begin with, let's recall the main theoretical points, and then we will try to solve tasks on different level difficulties. After completing the training, check your work with the correct answers and be sure to return to the incorrectly mastered material if you made a mistake in the formation of the structure. After all, practice is needed in order to identify and eliminate gaps in one's knowledge.

You can often hear that in the grammar of the English language there are twelve categories of active tense. But in fact, there are three times, like everywhere else, but there are four aspects for each of them, i.e. all tenses have 4 different usage situations. Let us briefly review these aspects.

Simple (Simple/Indefinite)

The constructions of the category of times are intended to convey single cases, or vice versa, regular and periodic actions, plans. Present tenses have a predicate in the infinitive, past in the second form of the verb and future - an infinitive with an additional will. Note that in interrogative and negative sentences, the predicates of the past are also put in the infinitive, since the auxiliary did takes over the form of the past.

In the statements of the present for verbs used with nouns or pronouns of the 3rd person, it is characteristic special form with the addition of s/es endings. When composing questions and negatives, simple tense requires the use of the auxiliary verb do(es)/did/will and the particle not.

Usually, simple tenses in English, when performing the exercises, they do not cause difficulties.

Continued

The category is used to denote processes of actions and events, i.e. what is being/was/will be done at a particular point in time. You may also encounter the use of times of this type not with time indicators, but in comparing one action with another.

The predicates consist of the corresponding form to be, the participle I and the necessary additional elements (will and not). In interrogative constructions, the predicate is separated, because to be appears at the beginning of the sentence, and the participle remains in its place.

The narrow focus of the continued aspect is quickly and easily memorized and, as a rule, students do almost no mistakes when doing exercises for the continious tenses in English.

Perfect (Perfect)

Indicates the completion of an event or action. Using this type of construction, we can express the sequence of events or the end of an action by the onset of some time.

Summarizing knowledge on the structure of predicates of this tense form, it is important to note auxiliary have, which has a different ending depending on the time. In the present, the predicate has the form have / has (3rd person), in the past had, in the future will have, and in all cases participle II is added. It is important to remember this when solving exercises in English for all possible types of perfect.

Perfect continuous (Perfect Continuous)

The task of combinations is to show an event that began earlier, which continues at the moment of the second action, and, most likely, will still occur, while the second action has already ended. Speaking plain language, it's still the same continius in English, but with completed and tending to completion actions.

The compound predicates of this aspect have three elements: the verb have / has / had, the auxiliary form has been and the participle I (+ will is added in the future tense). Exactly the same transformations take place with have as in the simple perfect.

Refreshing basic grammatical information for the times English verb, let's move on to developing the skills of their correct use in practice. A little advice: to successfully complete each exercise for all tenses in English, pay attention to the circumstances of the tense and the type of verbs that they receive in Russian translation.
